Electric Vehicles are worse for the environment than ICE cars.

The biggest push for electric car adoption has come due to the threat of climate change and pollution. People want to adopt a green lifestyle and do not want to pollute the environment using fossil fuel cars.

Therefore, it is natural to ask if electric cars are actually cleaner than their gasoline counterparts. There are many misconceptions about electric cars and their impact on the environment. We can look at a few major points about EV’s and the environment.

Power Source

An electric vehicle is only as clean as the power source. A major benefit of an EV is that it does not emit any tailpipe emissions. This means many urban centers can benefit from cleaner air with 100% EV adoption. However, a major source of concern is the power source or the way in which the electricity is generated. Many areas still rely heavily on fossil fuels to generate their power.

So even though some EV’s are using power from fossil fuel sources, they still go a long way to eliminate pollution from city centers and residential neighborhoods providing a better quality of life.

Additionally, states where people prefer driving EV’s also have the most renewable energy generated. This allows EV’s to become truly green.

EV Batteries

Another point of contention is the battery of the Electric Vehicle. One can say that the battery is the main component of any EV. People feel that since most of the EV battery components are mined, that has a large environmental footprint and that makes EV’s not as environmentally friendly as we would like to think.

EV batteries contain a lot of components like lithium, cobalt among other materials. Lithium and cobalt can be difficult to extract and do take a lot of energy to refine. Research is underway to reduce the amount of materials required in an EV battery and to speed up development of different research that aims to provide better batteries that not only require less materials, but are much more energy dense so they require smaller battery sizes.

This will go a long way to ensure that EV’s are not only a smart financial investment they are well and truly green and environmentally friendly. We can help the environment in small ways and plug in electric vehicles are one way to ensure our carbon footprint is lowered by stopping use of fossil fuels.
